Check-up and clean

A routine examination, professional clean and personalised advice, usually every six months.

A regular check-up is the foundation of dental care. Your dentist examines your teeth, gums and soft tissues, checks existing fillings and crowns, and looks for early signs of decay, gum disease or wear.

A professional clean removes plaque and calculus (tartar) that brushing and flossing cannot reach, followed by polishing. Where appropriate, we apply fluoride to help strengthen enamel.

We take digital X-rays only when clinically indicated, and we explain what we see on screen so you can make informed decisions about any treatment.

What a visit involves

Update of your medical history and any concerns you have

Examination of teeth, gums, bite and jaw joints

Scale and polish; fluoride treatment if suitable

Digital X-rays if clinically indicated

A written summary and, if needed, a treatment plan with itemised fees

Common questions

How often should I have a check-up?

Most people benefit from a check-up every six months, but the right interval depends on your oral health. Your dentist will recommend a schedule that suits you.

Does a clean hurt?

Most people find a professional clean comfortable. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, tell us and we can adjust our approach or use a local anaesthetic.

This page is general information only and does not replace an examination. Suitability, risks and fees for any treatment are discussed with you in person before you decide. Individual results vary.
